IoT Enables Bluetooth for Longer Range, Faster Speed and Mesh Networking in 2016
FREMONT, CA: Bluetooth SIG focuses on 2016 roadmap to serve the enterprises more efficiently by adding IoT to its Bluetooth technology.
Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) is increasing the Internet of Things (IoT) functionality in its Bluetooth technology for delivering longer range, higher speeds and mesh networking. The new enhancement energizes industries such as smart homes, industrial automation, location-based services and smart infrastructure.
The new version of Bluetooth, Bluetooth Smart(Version 4.0+) will increase the Bluetooth range by four times, up from its current limit of around 330 feet. The range of Bluetooth Smart will transform smart home and infrastructure applications delivering an extended, more robust connection for full-home or outdoor use cases. Keeping energy consumption constant, Bluetooth doubles the speed of data transfers that is more useful in critical applications such as medical devices and battery-operated devices such as sensors, increasing responsiveness and lowering latency.
By introducing mesh networking into Bluetooth technology, Bluetooth Smart devices can connect to distant devices together in a network enlarging coverage of an entire building or home, opening up home and industrial automation applications. It allows all devices on a network to talk to each other and transfer data either one-to-one if they’re within range or via other nodes if they’re not within range.
“There is significant demand from our members and the industry at large to enhance Bluetooth with the new capabilities we’re announcing today,” said Toby Nixon, Board of Directors Chairman, Bluetooth SIG. “Current projections put the market potential for IoT between $2 and $11.1 trillion by 2025. The technical updates planned for Bluetooth technology in 2016 will help make these expectations a reality and accelerate growth in IoT.”
