
Qualcomm Atheros Expands its Networking Territory with the Acquisition of Ikanos
FREMONT, CA: Wireless technology provider, Qualcomm announced a commercial pact between its subsidiary Qualcomm Atheros acquiring Ikanos Communications, a broadband networking semiconductor provider.
This merger will enable both central office and home gateway solutions enhancing Atheros’s footprint in the carrier fixed line segment with additional broadband access and modem technologies enabling users connected experience in home. This home gateway service will extend its role in carrier Wi-Fi and wired connectivity, further providing a central hub for IoE enabled devices, services and 3G/LTE small cells.
“The combination of Qualcomm Atheros’ broad home gateway IP portfolio, including Wi-Fi, powerline, small cell, and Ethernet switch technologies, and Ikanos’ advanced wired modem technology, is designed to create a complete solution for a wide range of home gateway products to better serve the carrier segment,” says Rahul Patel, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Qualcomm Technologies.
The agreement offers Atheros access over xDSL and G.fast modem technology and chipsets for Consumer Premises Equipment (CPE) and Central Office (CO) infrastructure. This Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology provides high bandwidth technology to homes and business sector over ordinary copper telephone line.
In addition, Ikanos offers multi-mode gateway processor and accelerator technology for fiber, LTE, Ethernet and hybrid copper applications It further allows remote diagnosis, management and optimization of broadband connection and quality of service and VoIP integrated access devices and bridges.
